A number of new television shows have hit the airwaves in the last few weeks. No doubt by now you've decided which shows are worth plopping yourself on the couch for. In HBO's Bored to Death, Jason Schwartzman plays Jonathan Ames, House series dvd a published writer in a sophomore novel slump due to that horrible malady known as writer's block. He drinks a lot of wine, smokes a lot of weed, and appears to have absolutely no grasp of reality. See, Ames has read tons of mystery novels, and his own first novel was of the private eye noir variety. Since he lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan, you can only imagine the kind of cases he gets, and the kind of trouble he attracts. Desperate Housewives dvd In between finding missing people and retrieving stolen skateboards, he must appease his magazine editor boss (Ted Danson) and try to get his ex-girlfriend (Olivia Thirlby) back. Luckily, he has his best friend Ray (Zach Galifianakis), a comic book artist, to lean on when things get dangerous.

Bored to Death has been billed as a hipster show, due to the occupations and neighborhoods of the main characters, but it definitely has universal appeal. It manages to be both funny and suspenseful. Despite the fact that he can be very selfish, Jonathan is likable, probably because he's not egotistical and is generally a calm, jovial guy. He often saves the day, completely by accident, but he has yet to let it go to his head. Zach Galifianakis is the king of awkward and can pull off even the most ridiculous situations and one liners thanks to his straight face and earnest delivery. The physical comedy often outshines the writing. Criminal Minds dvd box set Plus, there's an A-list guest star almost every week, like Kristen Wiig and Parker Posey as two of Jonathan's clients.
